Untold story behind the release of 21 Chibok girls

Image
The release of 21 Chibok girls by the terrorist Boko Haram group Thursday was the culmination of more than two years of negotiation and perseverance by a team which first assembled about two years ago, PREMIUM TIMES can report. The key actors who first initiated the process made their initial attempt to rescue the girls around July 2014, during the Goodluck Jonathan administration, but that effort floundered in the last minutes, PREMIUM TIMES learnt. The initial team comprised Shehu Sani, now a senator; rights activist, Fred Eno; a lawyer, Mustapha Zanna; the Nigerian Army, then led by Kenneth Minimah; the Swiss government; and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which was called in to play a neutral intermediary role. Mr. Sani, the sources said, began the process when he reached out to the Swiss Government through its Embassy in Nigeria and then linked them to Mr. Zanah who in turn connected the Swiss authorities and the International Committee of the Red

Buhari's wife has warned him that she may not back him at the next election.

Image
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's wife has warned him that she may not back him at the next election unless he shakes up his government. In a BBC interview, Aisha Buhari said the president "does not know" most of the top officials he has appointed. She suggested the government had been hijacked, saying a "few people" were behind presidential appointments. Mr Buhari was elected last year with a promise to tackle corruption and nepotism in government. His wife's decision to go public with her concerns will shock many people, but it shows the level of discontent with the president's leadership, says the BBC's Naziru Mikailu in the capital, Abuja. The president famously remarked at his inauguration that he "belongs to nobody and belongs to everybody". In the interview with Naziru Mikailu, Mrs Buhari said: "The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don't know them

Was Sonny Liston Murdered?

Image
It’s been 45 years since the former heavyweight champ was found dead of an apparent OD, but the haunting question still remains. M ore than a decade after Sonny Liston’s 1970 death from what a coroner called natural causes—and police suspected was an accidental OD of heroin—bookies, mobsters and cops in Vegas still whispered about whether the former heavyweight champ had died at the hands of someone else. In this excerpt from his upcoming book, The Murder of Sonny Liston , ESPN senior writer Shaun Assael recounts the day in 1982 when a sergeant in the Las Vegas police force got a strange tip that set in motion a new round of questions. From his gang unit office on the seventh floor of police headquarters, Gary Beckwith could look out over the two dozen officers under his command. One of the unintended consequences of the corporatization of Las Vegas was that it had chased out the old-time mobsters and allowed in a more murderous generation. A pathological killer, T

The world's longest reigning monarch, dies at 88

Following the death of the world''s longest reigning monarch, Thailand faces an uncertain future. The king''s unifying power, derived from a common touch and his devotion to Buddhism and the poor, held the country together through decades of political turmoil. Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch, died on Thursday at age 88, the royal household said in a statement. No cause of death was given. The statement said that "doctors [at Siriraj Hospital] treated the ailing king to the best of their ability, but the king's health continued to deteriorate before he passed away peacefully." The time of death was given as 3:52 pm (0852 GMT). The king had spent much of his time since 2009 in Siriraj, where he continued to perform his largely ceremonial duties as head of state. His last public appearance was in January. Bhumibol was a beloved and unifying figure in Thailand, whose 70 years on the

US Election Debate consumes social media

Image
"Vicious." "Dirty." "Ugly." Those were a few of the milder terms used by tens of thousands of people online to describe Sunday night's US presidential debate, as both candidates used the campaign set piece to launch their full social media arsenal towards the opposing side. The opening salvo was actually fired before the candidates took the stage, when Donald Trump appeared on a Facebook Live video with three women who accused Bill Clinton of sexual misconduct. A fourth woman in the video is the victim in a rape case dating to the 1970s. Hillary Clinton was appointed to defend the woman's rapist. The shaky video starts with about half a minute of silence, with Trump pointedly disregarding questions about his own vulgar comments in that leaked videotape . The Clinton camp was clearly ready for the attack. Her Twitter feed shot back with a clip of the first lady Michelle Obama speaking at the Democratic National Convention: "Wh

Why did the hashtag #WomenAreTrash trend in South Africa?

Image
It was supposed to be a day promoting the rights of the 1.1 billion girls around the world. So why did the hashtag #WomenAreTrash trend in South Africa? The majority of tweets for the UN's International Day of the Girl Child spoke about the worrying global statistics concerning child marriages and the necessity for a level playing field when it comes to education opportunities. And then, there were tweets like this: Many that signed on to Twitter this morning were surprised by the hashtag #WomenAreTrash. The origin of #WomenAreTrash It all began, seemingly spontaneously, on Monday with the hashtag #MenAreTrash, where some listed why men treat women poorly. One Twitter user whose thread led to much discussion is Sadie Torquato from Johannesburg. So if it's not a personal vendetta concerning relationships, what was the point of Torquato's thread? Speaking to us, Torquato explained that this was more than a personal rant, and the issues centred around &

'Women Tax Free' - The shop where men pay 7% more

Image
A New York pharmacy has been on the receiving end of a backlash after announcing a new store policy that "all male customers are subject to a 7% Man Tax". The unofficial levy was announced in the window of Thompson Chemists in the Soho district of Manhattan on Monday, alongside another sign declaring that "all female customers shop tax free". The move has triggered a passionate debate on Reddit and Facebook , fuelled by an image of the independent shop's window, which has been viewed several hundred thousand times on the photo sharing site Imgur. An employee of Thompson Chemists confirmed to BBC Trending that the new policy was to highlight instances of gender pricing discrepancy. It follows a study conducted by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs which found that on average "women's products cost 7% more than similar products for men." The gender price gap was even greater when it came to adult clothes and personal
