President Donald Trump is reportedly reviving the racist “ birther ” conspiracy theory, which claims that President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States.  Trump has been questioning Obama’s birth certificate in “closed-door conversations,” according to The New York Times, which cited an unnamed senator as being part of one such discussion.   The newspaper reported: “Mr. Trump’s journeys into the realm of manufactured facts have been frequent enough that his own staff has sought to nudge friendly lawmakers to ask questions of Mr. Trump in meetings that will steer him toward safer terrain.” Trump was for years one of the leading voices in the birther movement, a racist conspiracy theory that questioned the legitimacy of the nation’s first black president . He dropped the issue toward the end

Zimbabwe celebrates Mugabe's resignation

Image
Jubilant Zimbabweans have celebrated late into the night after Robert Mugabe resigned as president. He held power for 37 years and once said "only God" could remove him. His ally turned rival, former Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is expected to return from neighbouring South Africa and could be appointed as the new president within hours. Mr Mugabe's shock resignation came in the form of a letter read out by the speaker of parliament. In it, Mr Mugabe - who had so far resisted pressure from the public, the army and his own party to step aside - said he was resigning to allow a smooth and peaceful transfer of power, and that his decision was voluntary. The announcement abruptly halted an impeachment hearing that had begun against him on Tuesday. 'I'm so happy' Lawmakers from the ruling party and opposition roared with glee, and spontaneous scenes of joy erupted in the streets with people dancing, singing, honking car horns and waving fla

Mugabe agrees to step down

Image
Zimbabwe’s long-time president Robert Mugabe has agreed to the terms of his resignation and a letter has been drafted, an official source with direct knowledge of negotiations told CNN. The source said that the generals had given into many of Mugabe’s demands including full immunity for himself and his wife Grace, and that he would keep his private properties. According to the source, the aim of Sunday’s televised address in which Mugabe appeared to resist calls to step aside was to ensure the veteran leader openly declared the military’s actions to be constitutional. For the resignation to formally take place, however, a letter must first be sent to the speaker of Parliament, added the source. Mugabe had stunned the nation on Sunday when he refused to say in a live televised address if he was stepping down. His party had given him 24 hours to resign or be impeached after military seized power and kept him under house arrest. On Saturday, thousa

Nigeria rally to stun Argentina, Colombia back on form in friendlies

Image
Nigeria's Kelechi Iheanacho & Nicolas Otamendi of Argentina  EPA/YURI KOCHETKOV Alex Iwobi scored twice as Nigeria rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Argentina 3-2 in a friendly in Russia on Tuesday. Playing without the rested Lionel Messi, Argentina opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Ever Banega scored from a free kick, and it was 2-0 shortly afterward when Cristian Pavon crossed for Sergio Aguero to tap in. But Nigeria turned it around when Kelechi Iheanacho put a free kick past keeper Agustin Marchesin before the break, then set up Iwobi and Brian Idowu to score two minutes apart early in the second half. Iheanacho found Iwobi in the centre of the box to equalise with a first-time shot, then Idowu pounced to score from 18 yards after the Leicester man's loose touch fell to his feet. Iwobi then added his second goal in the 73rd minute after wrong-footing Javier Mascherano. South Korea and Serbia drew 1-1 after scoring within five minutes
